As our industry goes through the tumult of change it is easy to focus on the problems and be distracted from all the positive possibilities.
Recently, we have had industry suppliers comment that after reading about the newsagency industry on public blog posts they have decided not to bother with the channel. “It’s so fragmented, it has to fail,” they said.
An email from a newsagent on the verge of buying a newsagency called to say she ‘Googled’ newsagents and what she read made her wonder about the wisdom of investing in a newsagency.
It is unfortunate for everyone with their dollars invested in the newsagency channel that some public comment highlights the worst of the industry and not the best. We have a great industry with heaps of potential and running it down only damages the very industry to which we all belong.
The more people who say that small business and newsagents have ‘had it’, the more people will believe it. We have an unmatched network of newsagents in every city and town in Australia and it is up to us to make the most of it.
We all have questions, successes and failures and please use this forum to discuss—if there are problems let’s find a solution; if you have success, share the details; if you have a question we will ask someone who knows to answer.
I rather like Abraham Lincoln’s words;
“We can complain because rose bushes have thorns, or rejoice because thorn bushes have roses.”
