Positive and profitable

It’s is great to meet with industry suppliers who value the newsagency channel. I had a most productive meeting with Mark Darton from Universal Magazines last week. Mark had positive stories to tell; the 30th anniversary of Wellbeing, the increased frequency of Grand Designs and the success of their calendars and diaries which fill a niche between magazines and gifts—perfect for newsagencies.Last year these lines generated $400 million in newsagent retail commission!

Then a publisher from New Zealand is launching a magazine called The Shed (probably The Shid over there). It has enjoyed a 20% YOY growth and it look like it will fill a gap in the market here.

Newsagents appreciate publishers who try to work with them and understand the real issues at the retail face.

Let’s hope the publisher/distributors can reform their processes to make the magazine category one newsagents can enthusiastically value.
