It’s a new financial year. Time for business resolutions. What’s the plan?

On what will you focus your business attention for the next six to twelve months? What are the aims? Have you written them down, put a plan in place to measure them?

Let’s share our wisdom and make the ‘whole’ stronger.

It’s a theme I am looking at for the August National Newsagent and I need your help.

Tell me what your focus will be in the next 12 months (and why and how).With goodwill, we can capitalise on the depth and spread of this amazing channel. ‘They’ tell me I am naive to think so and it made me think…

Imagine there’s good times ahead, it’s easy if you try
Imagine no recessions,
No need for falling sales or grim, depressing tales
Imagine all the newsagents sharing all their knowledge.
You may say I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one
We hope someday you’ll join us and the newsagency channel will thrive as one.

I often rabbit on about how we can build on the strength of the channel if all newsagents displayed the N signage and we could be visible as a national channel. Share your focus, let’s build a strategy to focus the entire channel.

  1. I am not sure how the N signage is distributed or if there is a cost involved ,What if you sent every member new signage and offer a discount for membership for every newsagent that sends back in a picture of the new N logo on display . Just a thought …

    • Great idea Shaun, I thought the same myself!
      I will distribute an N logo sticker in the next National Newsagent magazine – so that is 2000 stores covered – and the state association managers will also distribute as they are in the market place. A reward for a photo is a good idea ( I will suggest that in the August National Newsagent) and I will leave it to the Associations to offer a discount membership or at least some reward.
      The N logo sticker will not suit every outlet but it is a start and we can send variations as the demand indicates. At least we will get the brand out there.

  2. DEAL WITH ONCE AND FOR ALL, GORDON & GOTCH / NDC AND THE MAGAZINE SITUATION!
    STOP ALL THE NEGATIVITY WHICH IS REGULARLY VIEWED BY OTHER THAN AGENTS ON FACEBOOK / BLOGS ETC WHICH QUITE POSSIBLY AFFECTS POTENTIAL BUSINESS PURCHASERS AND PULLS DOWN THE INDUSTRY.
    SEND ALL THE EMAILS RECEIVED BY YOU COLLECTIVELY REGARDING MAGAZINE COMPLAINTS TO GG & NDC SO THAT THEY MAY KNOW WE ARE UNITED IN OUR DESIRE TO HAVE THE SITUATION RESOLVED AND FAST!

    • The ANF is working with publishers and distributors to try to improve the magazine supply processes – it is not a simple task but be assured work is going on to ensure that allocations, sales and returns of magazines is an easier, more cost effective process. It hasn’t happen yet because of all the conflicting elements, but like beautiful hair – it will happen!.
      National Newsagent also alerts the distributors and publishers to the problems and asks for feedback and fixes.
      I cannot stop the negativity that other agents may publish. We have free speech – it is up to you and others to focus on the positives, and remember that negative talk effects the goodwill value of your business.So let’s get positive and working towards a strong united industry that everyone wants to buy into.

      • Is it possible and you may already do this but keep newsagents updated on any new ground when it come to magazine problems , you say work is going on at the moment ,I really think you need to get this out to the newsagents , I am sick of all the knockers out there saying that the ANF does nothing bla bla bla , I do believe there is work getting done behind the scenes and we probally will not hear about it until it happens but we need more members so I feel that if newsagents know things are getting done it may be possible to get some members .As I said you might already do all this and I just miss it .

        • Shaun, you are right there is a bit behind the scenes and I hope this will be public soon. The ANF has been very vocal with Network Services about some of the changes there and they are working to find solutions.

After going through the ANF award process, I have promised myself to start a folder listing the promotions, sponsorships/donations, and especially the really successful ideas/promos that we have run! It can be difficult to remember all that we do in our shops to drive sales and customer awareness. With Tatts, Ink, seasonal (Hallmark Alliance) competitions/promos, magazine, Western Union, Phone, newspapers, it can be too easy to forget the really good ones that work – and that could be ‘rehashed’. EOFY is like New Years Eve….time to think of the past year, and make a few resolutions for the next 12 months.
