Recently you would have seen our Facebook and Instagram posts on the Cross family from Bunbury, WA.

Suzanne and Ian were very pleased to announce that they had sold the 1st Division ticket in lotto on Saturday 19th March 2016.

As a result of this sale, the comms team spoke with Suzanne and Ian to discuss the sale of the winning ticket for their inclusion in our new social media ‘meet the member’s initiative’.

It was soon evident from our discussions that the Cross’s had so much more to share with our members; through diversification they have seen their business and customer base grow dramatically over the years.

Suzanne and Ian bought their business 12 and half years ago, when their first born was just four months old. Since then, their family has grown to include two more children, plus many regular customers that they now call family too.

“We love being involved in the industry, it’s a family business in regional country, so we can take the time to stop and chat with our regulars and have fun at the same time,” Suzanne said when asked to describe the best things about owning the business.

They must be doing something right they’ve proven it year in year out, recently scooping awards for:

2014 South West WA Small Business Retail Industry Award Winner.

When asked what they do and how they do it so well Suzanne said< “We have an established website for online shoppers and now have a customer base extended to all around Australia. We use HUBBED to ship many of the parcels to the Eastern States so it’s a WIN-WIN as agents for HUBBED.

“In addition, locals often find us online and discover products that they didn’t realised we sold.

“Further, we have successfully integrated an online card business Card Gift Central is also an additional income stream complimenting our newsagency.

“Card Gift Central continues to grow our customer base by building relationships and connecting with new people. I go out each week and visit others on the benefit of using this as a marketing tool for their own business and get paid for sharing it and so has taken our store to a whole new level.

“The sky’s the limit in the newsagency industry, paramount you need to diversify and constantly explore different ways to continually market your brand and store.”

Diversification is one of the key elements when owning a business today.

Suzanne also noted out of interest:

“I went into JB Hifi yesterday and right near the counter next to all small electrical goods was 2.5m tierage of greeting cards. Newsagencies will not move forward if we don’t diversify. In a million years who would have thought other businesses would come to their local newsagent in Bunbury on better branding ideas, retaining and acquiring new customers/clients.  NOT ME for one, but it’s all about diversifying and truly stepping out of the box!”
